Spring is a season full of great transitional periods. Fashion month has ended, fashion retailers are preparing for market week, and college seniors are getting ready to graduate. Nu View, however, has spent the whole year transitioning from lifestyle to exclusively fashion. It is tedious yet gradual in a way that's similar to an individual's experience of switching from one fashion aesthetic to another. If you had an emo phase in high school, you understand.

People revamp their closet all the time, but spring gets a unique kind of attention when it comes to transitioning seasons. We believe that the start of spring births creative thinking, which begs the question: how do we incorporate the greatness of these new trends into our wardrobe? The transition from winter to spring clothes shouldn't be stressful, it should be fun and experimental even on a budget. That is why we are calling March "The Great In-between." March starts while its still winter and ends in Spring. The is no definitive holiday like New Year's and Valentine's day to fall back on in March. So this is the best time to take your style to the next level. Make this month about taking up space. Advocate for all kinds of women during international women month through unique graphic tees during your city's march on the 8th. Use this transitional period and make it worth defining.

"Fashion has always been a powerful political tool used to communicate a message, positive or negative"

-Yara Shahidi as Zoe Johnson on Grownish.

What makes the leaders of the fashion industry special are that they don't just dress nicely, they inspire people to be just like them. We are inspired by those who lead with their most unpopular opinions, and sometimes, they portray those opinions through they choice of clothing. People like Janelle Monet, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Ashley Graham are style icons that also are known for way more than their sense of style. People pay attention to them because they are not afraid to be authentic inside and out. Leaders promote inclusivity, which makes all the difference between being intimidated and being inspired to be better. Historically, they introduce new interpretations of societal standards. The New Look wasn't popularized because Christian Dior just got lucky. It was a direct response to an institutional limitation.

In light of inclusivity, Black history month will not be glazed over at Nu View. In fact, it is our job as Editors, who are people of color, to make not only UNT students aware of the culture that inspires trends today but to stay educated ourselves on cultures, sizes, and backgrounds outside of our own. Fashion can be a commentary or reflection of economic, social, and digital trends. Even Anna Wintour herself said, "fashion can be equally interesting and equally important when it's being subversive." Instead of just regurgitating new fashion trends back to you, we are going to give you content with a unique twist on modern-day fashion topics, so expect us to Lead you in the most fashionable and sustainable direction.

Don and Sofia

Fashion is indefinable and ephemeral, it lacks definition and stability, that’s why there are rules. Fashion rules were created to tell us what’s right or acceptable, to keep people in line, well, here a Nu View we say screw the line. Fashion is all about creativity and self-expression and the rules are what is limiting that, so we’re done following them. In 2020 there are no rules!

It’s January, and thus begins the new-year-new-me szn. However, in 2020, we’re making it the year for not giving a damn! In 2020 there is no more obsessively monitoring the latest fashion and style trends for the sole purpose of trying to fit in, no more caring about what others think of you in that crop top or wearing that outfit. From now on you set the trends, what’s in fashion is up to you, and the only person’s style approval you need is your own… and maybe Law Roach.

What I love most about the start of a new year is the eternal optimism: the hope that this year will be better than the last, the promise that this time you will stick to your New Year’s resolutions and that you’ve learned from your mistakes, the assurance of a fresh start and the feeling that this will finally be your year. For me, January has always been like the calm before the storm, the moment of peace right before the chaos. But, what if for once there was no storm? What if, this year we all decided to make this year ours? 2020 isn’t just the beginning of a new year, it’s the beginning of a whole new decade, it isn’t just merely another chapter, it’s a new book entirely. This year there will be no rules! No rules when it comes to fashion, no rules when it comes to style, or accessories, or makeup. Repeat after me: when it comes to fashion I’ll decide what’s trendy, I can wear white after Labor Day, I can mix fabric prints, when it comes to jewelry less isn’t more – more is more, I will wear black and navy blue together, I will shop from any section of the store I want to, boys or girls, because I can, something is in fashion or fashionable because I say it is. This year, the only trend anyone should care about is confidence, good thing it goes with everything.

This month what you can expect from Nu View won’t be articles on the latest style trends, or pieces that we should all have in our closets, or New Year’s resolutions about working out and losing weight. 2020 is the year of the individual, this year is all about us. We’ll be talking about the trends we love, the trends we’ve missed and are going to be bringing back, even if no one else does.

We’ll be talking about our FASHION resolutions, for example, what’s mine? This year I am going to dress like it’s always Fashion Week and the world is my catwalk, after all, city streets are the real runways.

Don and Sofia
